About

Koa Kai Canoe Club operates from Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park, providing outrigger paddling instruction for both youth and adult members. Originally founded in 1979 for local police officers, the club has long since expanded into an inclusive community group known as the "Sea Warriors." The coaching staff focuses on teaching the fundamentals of traditional Hawaiian outrigger racing alongside ocean safety, teamwork, and respect for the water. As a member of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA), the club maintains a supportive, family-friendly environment where keiki and adults learn the physical mechanics of the sport while connecting with local history. ### Program Highlights * **Age Groups:** Serves youth paddlers starting at 10 years old, as well as adult men and women. * **Schedule & Format:** Youth practices typically begin in mid-March and run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. * **Key Features:** Provides a welcoming entry point for beginners with no prior experience, utilizing a club fleet of 15 fiberglass canoes and two traditional koa canoes.
